Yellow Ostrich – Whale

Yellow Ostrich is the solo project of Alex Schaaf, frontman of Wisconsin experimental Pop/Rock band The Chairs. His song ‘Whale’ is a thrown-together mix of genres, seeming a bit messy at first with the drum intro, layered harmonies and random rhythms but partway switches to a more orderly and cleancut pop tune. (There is definitely the sound of a cat or human wailing in the background at one point though, am I right?)

His music is intriguing and unusual while also being easy to listen to and get into. While every other indie pop band trying to find yet another way to use the synth to create a fresh sound, Yellow Ostrich’s layered vocal harmonies, weird drum beats and unusual recording techniques have created a whole new sound that, quite frankly, I’m digging. Also be sure to check out his track ‘Campaign‘, another good one!
