With Death Cab releasing their first single in over two years, I guess they wanted to make a splash. Instead of filming a video for You Are A Tourist in a more traditional manner, they were thinking outside the box. “I know, let’s rehearse for days and then film it in one take with multiple cameras and stream it live on the internet for the whole world to see, and hope we don’t fuck up!” And that’s exactly what they did.
Conceptualized by Aaron Stewart-Ahn and directed by Tim Nackashi, the video was shot live with multiple cameras and broadcoasted through live stream using multiple online platforms. The video was artful and eye-catching and followed the band members as they weaved seamlessly through the set, which included a multitude of background dancers, different prop elements, interesting lighting techniques and a group of synchronized swimmer-esque dancers who created a kaleidoscope dance routine that was filmed from above.
While I’ve never been a big Death Cab For Cutie fan, the concept of this video is unique and a bit off the wall and I dig it. I can only imagine the amount of rehearsals that had to take place in order for them to do this video in one take, and they pulled it off without a hitch.
Unfortunately, due to copyright restrictions, they won’t let me post it on this blog so please go check it out HERE and listen to the song below.
