Portugal. The Man is an American psychedelic rock band based in Portland, Oregon that originally hail from the great white north… Wasilla, Alaska. Frontman John Gourley, who is also responsible for a lot of the album artwork done throughout the years, started the group as a side project when his band, Anatomy of A Ghost, broke up abruptly. He played with bassist Zach Carothers, using drum machines and synth-loops as the backing beat, until the project begain to gain momentum and in turn, more band members. The group is devoted to providing new tunes to their diehard fans on a regular basis and have released a full studio album every year since their formation in 2006. Yes, that’s right, an album every year. It’s for this reason they are constantly drawing huge crowds to their live shows, which are said to have really impressive visual effects.
Their new album, My Mind goes out today and there has been a lot of buzz surrounding the release but it’s this song off their 2009 release The Satanic Satanist that I dig the most. It makes me want to be hanging out with the top down (of my imaginary convertible), feet out the window, smiling at the sun. What a summer jam.
Oh, also, frontman John Gourley’s mustache has its own Twitter account. Yup.
