Geographer, a San Francisco based electropop trio, was born out of tragedy. Frontman Michael Deni fled west from New York after the sudden deaths of his father and sister and began to explore his grief through music, writing songs with the help of a synthesizer he found in the street. After months of creating tunes on his own, Deni found cellist Nathan Blaz and drummer Brian Ostreicher and Geographer was born.
Deni’s poetic vocals are the perfect addition to their thumping electropop rhythms and awesome cello arrangements. His soaring voice sets this group apart from other upbeat synth-pop groups, a distinction that has awarded them plenty of praise worldwide. They played at last years SXSW down in Austin and I’m going to go out on a limb here to say it was probably this song that made that happen for them. When it all comes together 45 seconds into the song, it just makes you feel good and that’s what music is all about.
