Here’s a track that’s been blowing up in the blogosphere after being named Best New Track by Pitchfork yesterday. Purity Ring is the musical side project of Born Gold (formerly Gobble Gobble) member Corin Roddick and fellow Edmontonian singer-songwriter Megan James. James’ strong vocals are great on top of Roddick’s use of heavy synth, drum beats and choppy sound bites. While admittedly I found the first few beats a bit abrasive for my tastes, halfway through the song I was hooked. It’s dark and dramatic but with James’ angelic vocals make it a little bit sunnier, all reasons to make you press repeat. So far this “future pop” duo has only released 3 tracks and I can’t wait to what else they come out with, and whether or not it will live up to the hype. So far this jam doesn’t rival their first song but it’s a close second.
This jam will be featured on an upcoming limited edition 7″ split with Braids via Fat Possum in October. Check out the new track below and catch them next week at the Electric Owl Social Club here in Vancouver.
