HOLIDAY SPECIAL: Sufjan Stevens – Sister Winter

A mere TWO DAYS separates us from Christmas, folks, and now seems like an appropriate time for a slow jam.. no?

Sufjan Stevens Christmas Box Set Album Cover

Indie pop singer/songwriter Sufjan Stevens first said he was going to write an album for each of the 50 states. He did two of those and decided, I suppose, to switch his focus to something more interesting… Christmas! “Sister Winter” was recorded for the Peace! Songs of Christmas Vol. V album, which is in a series of Christmas EP’s released each year between 2001 and 2006. While many of the songs on these albums were carols or covers, this is a Sufjan original and stands alongside a handful of others with titles like “Did I Make You Cry on Christmas Day? (Well, You Deserved It!)” and “That Was the Worst Christmas Ever!” Super uplifting stuff. Anyways, this weird and wonderful artist is truly one of a kind and love him or not, this song is undeniably beautiful, filled with breathtaking string arrangements, great percussion and beautiful vocal harmonies.
